Understanding the Heart of a Cavoodle
It took me a while to see that my Cavoodles were not being difficult. They were being truthful. Every nervous glance, every restless step, every little cry was a message I had not yet learned to read.
The more I watched, the more I understood the breed itself. These dogs are highly social, built to stay close, to read our moods, to make a home feel warm and alive. That tenderness is part of their magic, but it also means separation can feel like a sudden loss of the world they trust.
I had thought affection would be enough to carry us through. Instead, I learned that affection needed structure — routine, predictability, and small moments of proof that the world did not end when I stepped away.
One afternoon, after another anxious goodbye, I sat on the floor and finally understood what my dogs needed from me. Not constant presence. Not pity. Confidence. A path back to calm that we would walk together, one tiny step at a time.
Key insight — A Cavoodle’s clinginess is often a sign of deep attachment, not stubbornness. When we respond with patience and structure, we help them feel secure enough to be alone.
The shift in my thinking changed everything. I stopped asking why my dogs were anxious and started asking what the anxiety was trying to protect.
That question opened the door to healing.
